Installing a new toilet or replacing a damaged toilet flange doesn’t have to be stressful. You might be upgrading your bathroom. You could also be dealing with a leaking base. Learning how to install a toilet flange can save you time. It can also save you money and future headaches.

In this guide, the pros at Wade’s Plumbing & Septic help you. They walk you through the essential steps to a successful toilet flange installation. We’ll also cover common issues, must-have tools, and when to call a professional for help.

What Is a Toilet Flange?

A toilet flange (also called a closet flange) connects your toilet to the drainpipe and secures it to the floor. A proper flange ensures a tight seal, preventing water leaks and foul sewer gas odors from entering your home.

Step-by-Step Guide to Replace a Toilet Flange

1. Gather the Right Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the following on hand:

  • New toilet flange
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Wax ring or bowl seal
  • Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
  • Closet bolts (T-bolts)
  • Hammer
  • Chisel or pry bar
  • Putty knife
  • Old rags or towels
  • Hacksaw (for rusty bolts)
  • PVC cement (for PVC systems)
  • Adhesive remover (if needed)
  • Dremel tool (for cutting stuck flanges)

Tip: If you’re in Santa Cruz County and something goes wrong during installation, call Wade’s Plumbing & Septic. We’re available for emergency repairs.

2. Prepare the Work Area

  • Turn off the water supply to the toilet.
  • Flush the toilet and soak up remaining water with rags.
  • Disconnect the water supply line.
  • Remove bolts from the tank and carefully lift it off.
  • Unscrew the bolts holding the toilet base to the floor.
  • Gently rock the toilet to break the wax seal and lift the bowl straight up.
  • Set it aside on a towel or soft surface.

3. Remove the Old Wax Ring and Clean the Area

  • Scrape away the wax residue from both the base of the toilet and the floor flange using a putty knife.
  • Inspect the flange and drain pipe for cracks or damage.
  • Plug the pipe with a rag to block sewer gases.

4. Take Out the Old Toilet Flange

  • Unscrew the old flange from the floor.
  • If it’s stuck, try using a wrench or apply adhesive remover.
  • Use a hammer and chisel or a Dremel tool if necessary.
  • Clear debris and prepare the area for the new flange.

5. Insert the T-Bolts into the New Flange

  • Place the T-bolts into the slots of the new flange.
  • Ensure the bolts are aligned equally from the back wall so the toilet sits straight.

6. Position the New Toilet Flange

  • Press the flange into the drain opening.
  • The top of the flange should sit ¼ inch above the finished floor—not flush.
  • Ensure the bolts are straight and evenly spaced.

7. Secure the Flange to the Floor

  • Use screws or bolts to attach the flange securely.
  • Make sure the fasteners don’t protrude above the top of the flange.

8. Install the Wax Ring and Reconnect the Toilet

  • Press the wax ring onto the flange.
  • Carefully lower the toilet bowl onto the bolts.
  • Push down firmly to compress the seal.
  • Tighten the nuts evenly on both sides.
  • Reconnect the water supply and tank.
  • Turn on the water and test for leaks.
